Sodium alginate is also an extremely important and multifunctional natural ingredient in cosmetics and personal care products.

 

 

A. Thickening Agents and Stabilizers

Sodium alginate can effectively increase the viscosity of water-based formulations (such as serums, lotions, shampoos and body washes), giving the products a smooth and rich texture.

Stabilization: As a hydrophilic colloid, it helps stabilize oil-in-water emulsions, preventing the separation of oil and water phases and extending the product's shelf life. It can also stabilize foam, making it suitable for cleansing lotions, shampoos, and other products.

 

B. Moisturizing Agents and Long-Lasting Hydration

The sodium alginate molecule contains numerous hydrophilic groups, forming a breathable and flexible hydrophilic film on the skin surface.

This film not only prevents the evaporation of skin moisture but also absorbs and retains moisture from the environment (moisturizing effect), providing a dual-function moisturizing effect. It is widely used in moisturizing masks, essences, creams, eye creams and body lotions, especially suitable for dry and sensitive skin types.

 

C. Film-forming agents and immediate firming and lifting

When the solution of alginate dries on the skin, it forms a flexible film. As this film dries and shrinks, it creates a temporary physical lifting and firming effect, making the skin appear smoother and temporarily reducing the appearance of wrinkles.

Many immediate lifting masks, neck masks, eye masks, and the key ingredients of "slimming" firming body lotions.

 

D. Suspension Agent

Alginic acid sodium can suspend insoluble particles or microcapsules, ensuring uniform product texture and preventing the precipitation of active ingredients.

It is commonly found in facial cleansers and exfoliating gels containing abrasive particles, as well as functional serums containing colored beads.

 

E. Gentle Skin Care

Alginic acid sodium has excellent skin affinity, is gentle and non-irritating, and is suitable for formulations for sensitive skin.

The moisturizing film formed by alginic acid sodium creates a slightly moist healing environment for the skin, which is helpful for the repair of the skin barrier.

 

 

1. Face masks (especially sheet masks and sleep masks):

Offer a thick, rich texture of the essence liquid. Some high-end biological cellulose or gel masks have their base materials made from components such as sodium alginate, which can absorb a large amount of the essence liquid and closely adhere to the skin.

Long-lasting moisturization, providing continuous moisture after use.

 

2. Facial cleanser and shampoo:

The alginate increases viscosity, enhances the user experience, stabilizes the foam, and prevents the skin/ hair from drying after washing.

 

3. Essence Liquid:

Alginic acid sodium serves as the thickening base, enhancing the smoothness and premium texture of the essence liquid, and also facilitating the sustained release of active ingredients.

 

4. Makeup:

Alginic acid sodium is used in some mascara products to help the product adhere to the eyelashes and provide a certain shaping effect.

 

5. In some pre-formulated sprays or long-lasting formulations, it serves as a natural film-forming agent.
